South Stokes developed into one of the top schools in Stokes County for teaching and leadership in the 2010 decade. During this period, the Sauras received multiple District Teacher of the Year recognitions, and one Principal, Mr. Duggins, and one Teacher, Sheila Patterson were named the Regional Principal and Teacher of the Year, respectively.
In this decade four principals led the Sauras after Mrs. Whitaker left. Mr. Pekar, Mr. Menear, Mr. Duggins and Mrs. Cheek. Each principal worked to make South Stokes one of the most unique high schools a student could attend.
A part of our identity of being the only place in the world where you can be a Saura is the unique qualities of our school. Our Spirit Rock is an example of how our students show their Saura Pride at South Stokes.
South Stokes High School was also a place where memories were made. Senior trips, music concerts, and special events for the 50th anniversary in 2014-2015 were just some of the ways our students made great memories.
One memorable event was the solar eclipse of 2017, where students saw more than 90% of totality. Students and teachers went outside with classes to watch this rare event.
More memories were made at the bonfire before the West Stokes football game, where our students came together in solidarity at a fun event to celebrate the Sauras.
The memories continued during spirit week, one of the most exciting times at South Stokes. Students and teachers came together, sharing that common bond of camaraderie in being a part of something bigger than oneself.
It was during this time that the Saura mascot was revamped with a new costume, and the mounted Saura on horseback was introduced to South Stokes football games.
The JROTC program continued to be the pride of the region, dominating both drill and rifle competitions under the leadership of Major Baker and MSGT Grogan.
The theater department continued to inspire students under the leadership of Mrs. Holland. Some of the productions during this time were The Little Mermaid and The Living Storybook.
The 2010s were also a decade of athletic growth for South Stokes. Students showed up on Friday nights to support the Sauras on the gridiron, on the court, and on the diamond as South Stokes battled tough opponents and met the challenges head on. This spirit was personified by wrestlers Steven Fatz and Jackson Boles, who won state championships.
As we reflect on the 2010s, it's clear: South Stokes High School was looked upon as a beacon of educational achievement, community spirit, and a unique identity. Remember, it's the only place in the world where you can be a Saura.
